1920s Flapper Dress ~ the quintessential style

With 1920s fashion one immediately thinks of the Flapper, The Great Gatsby, Louise Brooks, Zelda Fitzgerald and the Bright Young Things. They defined an era. It was an era of youth and opulence. Wild parties, short skirts, bobbed hair, and dancing. Lots of dancing.

One of our luxurious flapper dresses particularly sums up the era. Sparkling sequins, the finest workmanship, and swirling movement in the patterns and design of the dress. Beautiful bias cut, arched panels provide full swish and flow in the skirt, for dancing away the night.

1920s Beaded Evening Dress with Trompe L'oeil floral beadwork.

A collectors dream

The exquisite trompe l'oeil beadwork of flowers, leaves and vines, is truly breathtaking, with the flowers highlighted in beads and pearls. Quite an oriental look to the floral patterns. The body of the dress is decorated in alternating, tight rows of sequins and beads to add subtle sparkle with every movement. The plunging, illusion neckline bordered in multi coloured beaded bands, creates dramatic focus. This is wearable art at its finest.

Vaudeville Gypsy: Vintage Glamour and Style for 21st Century Vamps

Vintage Glamour and Style for 21st Century Vamps has always been the byline for Vaudeville Gypsy, right from the start. The costume pieces I make contain elements of Vintage Fashion whether it is a design detail or antique embellishment.

This year we really have had a revamp. I have opened up my personal collection of antique clothing and accessories, making a select group of pieces available to purchase. My absolute love is 1920s fashion. My Assuit collection is made up exclusively of antique pieces, but that's a post for another day... I always try to make at least on piece of Assuit available when I can. Included at the moment is a darling 1920s Assuit dress in silvery gold on black brown net. It has such lovely detailing on the hem, which is made of pyramid shapes reflecting the design in the body of the Assuit, dropped waist style with a hip sash.

Currently we have some truly unique and beautiful vintage 1920s dresses in the Etsy shop. Several are heavily beaded and embellished beauties. All are in super condition in a variety of sizes. Below is a photo showing a selection of current, past and future items for Etsy.

One of my favourites is this rare 1920s gown with beadwork reflecting the craze for Orientalism as popularised by Paul Poiret. It is heavily beaded in an array of sparkling hues in exoticised patterns. The colours are stunning. This dress is a particularly rare example of a larger size in silk which has survived the ravages of time in excellent condition. The styling is a simple column which allows the exquisite beadwork design to sparkle in all its glory. Original 1920s pieces of this quality make a great investment and represent true value for money.

Bloomers To That. It's Just Capri Pants

Back in April this year I originally shared on Facebook(see photo below) my mock up of a capri pant design I wanted to produce. There's a lot of these knocking about so I wanted to be a little different, to put my own stamp on them, so to speak. I knew from experience I wanted them to be a slim fit and below the knee to give the most flattering look to the shape of the leg. They needed to be ruffled. Well, I have a small ruffle addiction which I tend to need to nurture here and there ;-) And lace. Lace had to be featured. I just so happen to have a small stock of a gorgeous antique style lace which is the perfect shade of champagne to give a lovely vintage feel to anything. This led to a double ruffle. Now when I say ruffle, this is actually a circular flounce cut from one whole piece of fabric, without seams. This type of flounce reduces the bulk at the top of the 'ruffle' but is full around the bottom with lots of movement. This combined with graduating the flounce from front to back and short to long, goes a long way to emphasising a shapely leg.

So here is the original mock up from April, cute but not quite there

More tweaking of flounces required! So I made them bigger. Eats up the fabric this way, but I think you'll agree, the end result is worth it. I've listed them on Etsy as a made to order item in a choice of fabrics, sizes and with the option to have a standard waistband or a low rise waistband.
